Lighting in Still Life Photography The first step to consider in still life photography is the lighting. You will want the object to have light directly from a single direction, so that you can have light as well as casting shadows on the object. This will enable it to have a depth of field and dimension. You will need to choose whether you desire a soft or harsh light. The harsher the light the more shadow you will create. Reflectors are often used in still life to tone the light down. The best and most commonly use type of lighting for still life photography is side lighting. Side lighting will certainly help you to achieve more contrast between the objects.

Colour Control In Still Life Photography With still life photography, you will have colour control. You can have a choice of the colours of the objects you want to use. When choosing the colours, say with fruits and leaves, you will want a contrast in colours, but still retaining a natural look. Harmony is the best word to remember when using colour control. The colour will attract and draw the viewers eye, so if it is not pleasing to you, chances are your viewers will also find it just as displeasing.

Still Life Abstract Motif Photography With still life, you can use an abstract motif. You might have a unique or an interesting cut on fruit, such as a melon to reveal the red core inside. The angle of the cut, the colour it expresses and the meaning of the picture will require thought from the viewer. Some viewers will see differently from what another viewer might see. What one view as art may seem unappealing to another. Never let these influence or change your dreams and halt you from becoming even better in your work as a photographer.
